The Brief

Specac specialise in supplying laboratory optic equipment to academic, industrial and research institutions. Upon needing to relocate from their premises, Specac required Office Profile to provide an innovative design solution, incorporating a flexible and workable layout to suit their complex factory requirements and safety regulations.

The client required a shell and core fit-out including a full mechanical and electrical package provided overhead from a steel cradle, and compressed airlines for the laboratories. The office fit-out needed to provide open plan areas on the ground and 1st floor, a reception, meeting rooms, teapoints, a large canteen area and new washrooms.

As the client’s lease had expired with the old property, we had to accommodate the occupation of staff before final completion. Working alongside the Project Manager, we established exact factory requirements and project delivery time to ensure the refurbishment was completed successfully.

What we did

In the two open plan office areas, the desks were clustered into departmental sections so that the team could easily communicate together. A statement reception feature wall and teapoint was fitted along with a relaxed reading corner. In the meeting rooms, an acoustic folding wall was installed to allow staff full control of their working space. The key concept of collaboration was also incorporated within the loose furniture, such as our Cave seating. The den-like structure provides a safe and collective place for business meetings, whilst the acoustic and modular elements creates a striking, enclosed design.

In the canteen, we incorporated bright colours and bespoke patterned wallpapers to create an exciting and busy breakout space. Next to the canteen is a small games room, complete with a multipurpose Pool and Ping-Pong table.

The warehouse unit adjoining the office block was subdivided to create a number of specialized assembly rooms, stock rooms and workshops to facilitate the Specac manufacturing team. These rooms incorporated full lighting and complex mechanical and electrical packages as well as specific partitioning and extraction/dust control requirements.
